LEADER ▶▶▶ Effi cient use of resources and inputs
Natural resources are not going to be infinitely available. This is why humans constantly look for ways to use these re- sources more efficiently and find alternatives. In a sense, farming is no different. Farmers try to use resources and in- puts as efficiently as possible and try to match the amounts used with the quantities crops need, and to minimise the environmental impact. Precision farming technologies can help farmers in doing so. Fertiliser spreaders for instance, get better and better in applying granular fertiliser in the correct amount at the right m2
. Our wrap up of the latest
spreader developments shows how. Nonetheless, British Frontier’s manager Edward Downing says an average of 40% of the nitrogen fertiliser applied isn’t utilised and could be lost. He gives 6 tips to improve this utilisation. Modern sen- sor technology can assist in applying inputs accurately, and we’ve made an overview of herbicide spot spraying innova- tions. A technology that was used in 2003 already by one of our 10 most innovative farmers Manfred Hurtz! He however carefully mentions that shortages of precipitation, like in 2017, 2018 and also in 2019 (he re- ceived 200 – 300 mm versus 600 mm normally), have far bigger impacts on harvests. That’s why Dutch growers rely more and more on high capacity irrigation systems and soil moisture sensors to manage irrigation.
