THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ The great outdoors
Researchers recently suggested that on pasture and, to some extent, on alternative outdoor access areas (especially bedded packs), dairy cows can express more of their natural behaviours. But not all opera- tions are able or choose to provide access to pasture. Of course there are many factors at play when it comes to pasture access, including too many cows with too little space; months of heavy rain, snow or cold weather; and low daily grass intake, unpredictable grass growth, milk output, labour and fi- nance, etc. But when it is possible and it’s the chosen route, farmers can increase pasture use by con- sidering some steps. Scientists say pasture use benefits include decreased negative social interactions between cows due to more space as well as expression of more natural behaviours such as lying, standing and walking; they also say that outdoor bedded packs can provide better footing – which can be beneficial for oestrus behaviour. While there is much room for research around grazing and the motivation of dairy cows to access alternative outdoor areas, a more in-depth look at steps to increase pasture use can be found on page 39. These steps can help build a more solid foundation to make the best use of pasture when it is feasible, and thereby help farmers reap the rewards of the great outdoors. This edition also boasts a Cow Health section – happy reading! Zana van Dijk, editor Dairy Global
