THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ A Happy cows = happy farmer

ll dairy farmers strive for happy and healthy cows, as a herd manager it is vital that you take all the necessary steps to protect the health of your animals. Looking after your cows properly and monitoring them regularly for signs of ill health are the best ways of preventing disease, and controlling its spread should an outbreak occur. A healthy herd provides high quality milk and superior reproductive performance. Keeping diseases at

bay must therefore be top priority. There are so many factors and stressful periods that can lead to the deterioration of a cow; heat stress, calving and seasonal feed changes are just to name a few. The article on page 24 tackles the difficult and challenging phase of calving. It highlights the importance of paying special attention to the pre-calving phase as it sets the stage for how well the cow performs after calving. We also take a look at new treatments for digital dermatitis. Digital dermatitis is one of the main causes of lameness in cows, and so it is one of the main reasons for mature cattle to be culled prematurely, next to mastitis and infertility. Although a vaccine is not expected anytime soon, treatments for this persistent disease are evolving. Read about them on page 22. This special also covers how the use of rumen protected methionine, coupled with maximising microbial protein, is a valid strategy to increase milk production, turn to page 20 to find out more.
