THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ More than just ‘Pets’
The Covid pandemic has had an impact on us all. One of the topics discussed in this new edition of All About Feed is the impact of the pandemic on the pet food market. Lockdowns that were imposed around the world also had an impact on the human-pet relationship. We were urged to stay inside and keep our number of contacts as low as possible, which strengthened the relationship with our companion animals. This development influenced the pet food market as so-called ‘pet humanisation’ plays an important role. Pet owners consider their pets to be family members and want the best food for them. They are more aware of product labelling and ingredients and more often choose vegan or organic food for their pets. On page 8 of this edition of All About Feed you read more about these new developments in the pet food market. In addition, on page 6 we take a closer look at the shelf-life of pet food ingredients. It appears that the fastest growing ingredients are fresh and raw prod- ucts. Storage and freezing these ingredients and the application of high temperatures during food processing could have an impact on quality. This requires a better understanding of the shelf-life of these ingredients to ensure safe healthy pet food.
