Agricultural organizations want EU strategy for protein cultivation
Copa & Cogeca, FEFAC and Euroseeds have called on the European Commis- sion to take a leading role in promoting domestic cultivation and the use of Eu- ropean plant
proteins. They require a le- gal framework and clear targets to meet the increasing demand for plant proteins, including from the food in- dustry. A legal framework should help make the EU plant protein sector com- petitive. “There is no simple solution to overcome the EU’s shortage of pro- tein-rich sources. Despite advances in plant breeding, cultivation and pro- cessing technology, Europe is unlikely to become fully self-sufficient,” the or- ganisations said. According to them,
protein crops are in many cases regard- ed as small crops or special crops, which means that there are insufficient solutions at the farm level to control plant diseases and pests. The organisa- tions also cite the new biological tar- gets in the Green Deal. The rules for this and possible trade distortions will am- plify ‘the structural shortage of biologi- cal proteins’. They specifically ask for long-term incentives for stakeholders, insight into the production and con- sumption of vegetable protein for food and a framework for competitive re- search. They also want more communi- cation to consumers about sustainable agricultural production in the EU.

On demand: Webinar on heat stress
All About Feed hosted a webinar on the very ‘hot’ and important topic of heat stress in livestock. If you missed this webinar or would like to watch it again, be sure to catch it on demand – it’s available now. In poultry, heat stress affects growth, reproductive performance, and egg production. In pigs, increased respira- tion and a loss of appetite have been observed. In dairy cows, decreased per- formance and reduced milk production is linked to heat stress. These are just

some of the consequences of heat stress. But what can be done? What are the feed and nutrition strategies that can combat heat stress? What role does animal health, gut integrity and, for ex- ample, natural betaine have in mitigat- ing the harmful effects on livestock? Line-up of speakers: Deepashree Kand, Global Technical Marketing Consultant at IFF, Ruth Raspoet, Poultry R&D Man- ager at Phileo by Lesaffre and Professor Philip Thornton, Research & Innovation Strategist, University of Edinburgh.
