Because of the maternity leave of my colleague and All About Feed editor Marieke Ploegmakers, I am writing the column “Thoughts” this month. As editor for the sister title Pig Progress I’m honoured to be asked to fill this space for once, while the rest of the magazine has been skillfully put together by Emmy Koeleman. Many of you will no doubt remember her, as she edited All About Feed until 2019. She kindly consented to step in temporar- ily during Marieke’s absence, a decision which was greeted with great enthusiasm by the team. The quality of the publication is clearly in good hands for the coming months.
As you can see, in this edition there is a strong focus on soybean production – or rather, how to reduce the world’s dependency on soybeans. Increasingly the world is becoming aware that our chickens and pigs are partly respon- sible for a great deal of soybean production, which leads to initiatives to see how we could feed livestock differently. There are a large variety of solutions these days; one only has to think of the various soybean alternatives discussed in
the fourth edition of All About Feed this year. This edition also deals with the trade and sustainability impacts of soybean production (from page 20). One thing is for sure: this is certainly not the last issue in which the impact of soybeans will be discussed.
