Viruses and the role of feed

ince early last year not a day goes by without someone speaking about the corona virus: how it’s affect- ing our lives and − most of all − how we can get out of this pandemic. With people now being vaccinat- ed there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel but, if you ask me, it’s still uncertain when this situation will actually end. So, lets talk about another virus instead: the African swine fever virus (ASFv)

and the role of feed in its transmission. A couple of years ago, research in the US showed that viruses such as PEDV and PDCoV could indeed be spread via animal feed. Both are coronaviruses by the way. Fortunately, there is no evidence that COVID-19 spreads through food. However, after finding out that these swine viruses were transmitted via feed, the role of feed in the spread of AFSv was also of concern. Such concerns appear to be well-founded, as ASFv can be stable in feed. Ensuring feed safety is the best way to reduce the risk of vi- ral viruses entering farms. This means implementing biosecurity procedures at feed mills, and being aware of the country of origin for each feed ingredient and additives may also help to reduce the risk. In addition, implementing a quarantine for feed imported from high-risk countries could be a useful strategy. Well, we all know how this is done by now. On page 6 you will find more about the role of feed in the spread of ASFv.
