are positioned to predict an incident and alert a driver or a bus operator to the violation as video technology on school buses advances. Already, Safe Fleet offers its Predictive Stop Arm alert system that detects when a mo- torist is going to blow past the school bus. There are other use cases where technology powered

by AI and ML can recognize patterns to enable more automated and intuitive system alerts, explained Melba Rivera-Irizarry, global product leader with Verra Mobility, also a provider of school bus stop-arm video technology. “We see those types of solutions continuing to grow as the industry learns how to establish and define these types of patterns or events for behavioral learning,” she said. “A great example of how this is used today is through the detection of an unsafe driving maneuver,- like illegally passing a school bus, the automated trigger that captures that violation. In the future, we likely will see an evolution, like a better understanding of risk exposure factors that help predict the severity and like- lihood of unsafe street environments to protect and take measures to improve safety conditions.”

Richie Howard, AngelTrax president and CEO, said AI tools are available for aiding school bus drivers and improving their driving habits. For example, he said two built-in HD cameras mounted to the inside of a school bus windshield can capture both the exterior traffic and and the interior view of the cab, driver and student passengers. Included is the ability to automatically upload alerts about cell phone usage, hard braking, hard turns, and speeding to a secure server for review with an internet connection. “This powerful device’s built-in AI processor helps

capture a definitive account of what really happens on the road by detecting phone use, following too closely and seatbelt use in addition to warning of an imminent collision,” he explained. “Fleet managers can then use this data to coach and encourage drivers to improve their driving performance, which can help prevent dan- gerous incidents in the future.” As technology does advance, however, it’s important to manage the technology as many fleets will, in time, be likely to have different video technologies on the bus: external cameras and sometimes internal cameras.
