turing end and in the whole project management arena.” CJ Vose, sales director at Tyler Technologies, predicts

a wider range of applications of this technology. As the industry sees a rise in electric vehicles, his company, like others, is researching new ways to integrate telematic data from electric vehicles into its student transportation management software. In considering options, Apunda emphasized the impor- tance of establishing needs and goals before looking at providers. “Do your research and ask your peers from other districts about their experiences,” he said. “And look for providers that integrate with other fleet technologies.” Johnson in New York said when planning to add to a fleet, it’s important to make sure the GPS/telematics system being considered is compatible with electric vehi- cles. And when encountering a situation where managed charging is not available for the EV project, having a GPS/ telematics system that provides the real-time state of charge and sends alerts will prove to be helpful.

“It’s not a substitute for having managed charging but

it can help staff identify potential charging issues in real time so they can react,” he noted. “Even with managed charging, having a GPS/telematics system that can pro- vide the bus side data to your managed charging system helps make the most of having managed charging.” Take time to talk with all the providers that are out

there, and make sure that they have really tested with the vehicles you plan to roll out, Leach advised. He also rec- ommends making sure a provider’s platform is open and interoperable, and it doesn’t force the use of a particular web interface or single software suite. “Data should be able to flow wherever it needs to,” he said. In some circumstances, a staged implementation

makes the most sense, Tyler’s Vose said. “In any case, make sure your KPIs or goals are well understood before researching any solutions,” he concluded. “Pose lots of questions to your current or potential vendors.” ●
