of charge has been most beneficial has been in monitoring the charging cycle when the bus is parked after its route,” New York’s Johnson reported. “Our project did not start out with man- aged charging, but recently we’ve been using the GPS/telematics software to view our real-time state of charge while the buses are parked and charging.” He added that the Tyler Technologies soft-
ware used by his district also sends alerts if charging hasn’t occurred in 30 minutes. “Know- ing if the EV is charged enough for its route has been very valuable information,” he said. “Recently, we had a case where observing the real-time state of charge over the weekend allowed my staff to detect a potential charging issue and correct the issue before Monday morning.” For those wishing to get the maximum range
from batteries, this tech can be employed to help establish safe limits.
“We’ve had some customers who want to push the limits of range, and they loved be- ing able to watch the GPS location and state of charge of the bus live,” Leach recalled. “The bus also did a great job on the long trip and made it back with charge to spare.”
Aiding Planning A real plus is the support provided for good planning. “You can be intentional with when and where you route electric buses,” Transfind- er’s Civitella said. For a field trip or athletic event, for example, the distance involved may make it more practi- cal to assign diesel vehicles. Or if the data shows a charging station is located next to a gym or stadium, an electric bus may be a solid choice, with recharging taken care of while the event is under way. The ability to respond robustly to drivers is also a strong point, noted John Burciaga, fleet
