Understanding Misconceptions About School Bus Camera Systems
Know the facts to facilitate more accurate bids.
Surveillance system terminology can be confusing. It’s imperative to understand the terms before preparing RFPs. Accuracy will result in fewer questions and more thorough bids from suppliers. Some key terms to remember:
Resolution, such as 1080p, refers to pixel count and image size, not clarity. Images with high pixel counts will still be blurry if cameras are unfocused.
Wide Dynamic Range affects visibility, not your view’s width. It balances bright and dark areas to reveal details.
Camera Shutter Speed for capturing motion should be fast. Think 1/1000th of a second. At slow speeds, such as one-half of a second, motion will be blurry.
Storage Devices can accommodate the image quality you want. You’re not at the mercy of suppliers’ space limitations. Decide on resolution, duration, and frame rate. Then, use REI’s Record Time Estimator to help you choose the right storage device.
Bit Rate for a six-channel DVR should be 40 Mbps or more. High bit rates permit smoother video playback.
Mike Guzallis, REI’s associate product manager, notes, “Ask about the total bit rate of the DVR, not an individual camera channel. When additional cameras are added, more resources are used, reducing video clarity. The differences in clarity will be apparent if a supplier doesn’t have a sufficient bit rate.”
Digital Noise Reduction lessens background sounds and amplifies voices in audio. For video, it minimizes graininess caused by low lighting.
Millimeter Lens does not pertain to diameter. It refers to a camera’s focal length or what you see from the camera. Small numbers, such as 1.8 mm, deliver wide views. Large numbers, such as 4.0 mm, provide narrow views focused farther away from cameras.
Frames Per Second (fps) affects the motion seen in your video, not resolution. At 30 fps, motion is smooth. At 5 fps, it will be slightly choppy.
Camera Composition varies by supplier. While cameras may look similar, they will likely be made of different materials. Ensure the materials withstand rugged use.
Guzallis adds, “Be up-front about expectations. After receiving proposals, ask even more questions to decide which suppliers or solutions are best.”
