But Karam said he looks forward to the potential offered by operationally intuitive products. “We would like to see the application of AI to harness GPS and integrate with routing data to give us not only real-time bus locations, but also display speeds that move along with the bus icon,” he said. “We need real-time, in-your-face dashboards that will tell our dispatchers whether an employee is late or hasn’t shown up to work in real time, not twenty minutes later.”
Balanced Approach For the near future, a balanced approach may be
the safest way to go with AI. “AI promises to be a valuable tool if used properly,”
Gilleo said. “But there should be limitations on its use, and it should not reduce the human element.” Karam said it’s incumbent on school transportation
leaders to keep abreast of emerging AI products and features within the school transportation market space. “We need to be educated on AI and embrace its utility from a safety and efficiency perspective,” he said. In the process, the human element should never
be overlooked, Karam added. “Like anything else, we need to ensure AI is still controlled by human intervention through our oversight and professional experiences,” he said. ●
