Going Electric Shouldn’t Compromise Safety

For many school districts and transportation providers, electrification conversations focus on battery capacity, affordability, and charging infrastructure. As fleet managers explore electric buses, safety upgrades deserve equal attention.

Safety improvements often happen during new bus purchases; this timing creates a natural opportunity to address environmental and safety goals together. Electric buses are a chance to rethink student protection.

First Light safety solutions are energy efficient and help fleets stay highly visible. Unlike traditional lighting solutions, the Fully Illuminated Stop Arm™ (FISA) and Illuminated School Bus Sign™ (ISBS) deliver full-surface illumination using efficient LED technology, maximizing visibility while minimizing electrical draw.

First Light’s Director of Mechanical Engineering, Erron Leafloor explains, “First Light’s patented FISA technology uses low-power LEDs to provide maximum visibility

with minimal current draw, making them ideal for electric school buses. With the electric drive version of the Stop Arm, passive braking in the drive motor means zero standby power is needed once the sign is deployed, helping reduce overall power consumption while enhancing safety and visibility.”

For fleet managers and spec writers, seamless integration is also important. FISA and ISBS can be factory-ordered on electric buses across all major OEMs, allowing districts to standardize First Light equipment across their entire fleet, regardless of manufacturer. IC Bus has standardized both products across all bus models, including the Electric CE Series.

Low-draw safety systems like FISA and ISBS demonstrate that sustainability and safety are not competing priorities. Instead, efficient safety technology allows districts to strengthen one of the most important functions of a school bus: protecting students at every stop.
