It’s not a bad idea. We have had kids in the past actually drinking on the bus. -LinkedIn/Sherri L.,
Transportation Specialist, Wendell School District
Sounds like the office can have a machine or two. Also, the frequency of random drug testing needs to be increased. -LinkedIn/Jeremy

NTSB Recommends Alcohol Detection Systems on School Buses
In my years in the industry, I have seen a handful of bus drivers with drinking prob- lems! In half the cases, they were found out in the training phase or before. In the cases of active drivers, one [blew] less than a .01 (.04 is the legal limit for a CDL driver). I don’t know what the other two were, but all get fired with anything over zero! In that time, I’ve easily seen 500 drivers come and go. I don’t think it is a systemic problem, but I do think it could be an option in appropriate situ- ations. We are already subject to random drug and alcohol testing as well as can be tested anytime there is a reasonable suspicion. -Facebook/Daniel Johnston

I think bus drivers should be supported, trusted and adequately compensated. Paying poverty wages attracts less-com- mitted individuals. Instead of spending money to weed out the worst of the worst, we should be focused on attracting the best-of-the-best. Use the money to pay higher wages. -Facebook/Tom Baker
Trust me, if my kids were in danger, I would be out of that seat in a flash. I have even surprised my students when there was a problem on the bus how fast I can move. -Facebook/Jan Fox Frossard
S.T.A.R.T Educational Seminar Coming to STN EXPO West
I love this! I’m a retired school bus driver. I loved all my kiddos, big and small. I would do anything to protect them. This training is essential for drivers and aides. I highly recommend all districts send your drivers to this training! Gives your drivers the confidence to do their job to the beat of their ability! -Facebook/Terrie Waldron

Very good idea. I drove for many years. Seen many things and to handle many situations. Training is great, things happen very fast. -Facebook/Edward Saeger
No training like this at our location. It would be good if we could. -Facebook/Tracey Tinklepaugh Aleckna
We went through classes on how to de-escalate situations, how to stay calm in any situation, how to talk with the students to help them know code words for different situations, and how to keep intruders off the bus. We went through a hostage situation with the Sheriff being the bad guy. How to keep the kids in the safest locations of the bus and away from the windows. Taught us how to try keep the kids calm and so much to try remember. It took two days of training. -Facebook/Linda Rankin Cobb
