The National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) announced it is aligning itself with the National Transportation Safety Board’s recommendation that lap/shoulder seatbelts be required on all new, large school buses, but NAPT says purchase decisions need be made at the local level. NAPT also opposes lap belts. Read more about the position at stnonline.com/go/lx.

My thoughts are, who is going to buckle and unbuckle the students? The belt ends are hard to use and they take time. Now the vehicles behind the stopped buses are ready to go and blowing [through] the lights! Facebook/Susan Bernstein

It’s about time! Congrats on making a wise choice! Facebook/Max Christensen

Seatbelts for under age 8 or 2nd [grade] and under I agree with. Not the rest. It is always my [preschool] through 2nd who I’m reminding to [buckle up]. Don’t get me wrong. There [are] older kids, too, but they are few and far between. Also, those worried about getting kids out. Update buses, which will take time, to have quick-release buttons. One push, as you move back, belts can be pushed off and [the students] go as normal. In an emergency we’re supposed to release row by row, anyway. Facebook/Whitney Miszewski

We have seatbelts, but the kids don’t use them, even when they are told to buckle up. I have had teachers get on the bus and make sure everyone is buckled, and before I can leave the school, the kids unbuckle themselves. Facebook/Rick Ramsey

Calm down folks. This is just a statement from NAPT that they agree the use of lap/shoulder belts would increase safety if used. It is not a mandate to put them in or to even use them if they are installed. The facts are simple. Yes, they would increase student safety and, yes, it’s time to install them in school buses. Like it or not, they are coming! Facebook/Robert Travis

A middle school student was killed after a tire blowout caused a South Carolina school bus to overturn. Read more at stnonline.com/go/ma.

This is the first [fatality] this year. But we really don’t [want to] have that one. I know it was unexpected. Hurts our heart to even hear of the one baby. Prayers to all the driver and all families aboard that bus. Lord help console their sorrow. Facebook/ Ashley Bristo

The South Carolina mechanics take meticulous care of their buses. This is tragic. Facebook/Jeff Abrahamse

This should reopen the debate about whether to have all school buses and passenger buses have seatbelts. Facebook/Lenny Farrow
