students, drivers and the public,” he added. 247Security is developing AI-powered driver monitor- ing systems designed to help reduce distracted driving, phone usage, fatigue, and other high-risk behaviors behind the wheel. “Using technologies such as eye movement analysis, object tracking and real-time behavioral detection, the system can identify potential safety concerns and gen- erate alerts based on customizable user settings,” said Horvath. “These alerts allow transportation operators to proactively address issues before they lead to incidents.” Meanwhile, Clint Bryer, Safety Vision vice president
of sales for student transportation, said his company’s platform use a combination of AI-driven cameras and telematics to track driver fatigue, distraction, seatbelt use, smoking, mobile phone use, and sudden maneu- vers like harsh braking or rapid acceleration, enabling districts to move from reactive discipline toward proac- tive coaching. Bryer noted driver-facing cameras handle behavioral monitoring while outward-facing cameras capture road
hazards, stop-arm violations and external threats. Some systems add 360-degree coverage to eliminate blind spots around the bus. He explained that the technology relies on computer
vision and machine learning running continuously on edge hardware inside the vehicle, tracking head nod- ding or tilting, yawning, changes in eye-blink rate, long eyelid closures (indicating microsleeps), and gaze drift- ing from the road for extended periods. In-cab alerts heard as audible beeps or pre-recorded messages coach drivers to self-correct before a potential safety event occurs. Unsafe behavior flagged by AI systems generate video
clips for fleet managers to review, while safety scores serve as a starting point for coaching conversations, Bryer said. Adam Silbernagel, senior vice president of IT for school bus contractor Summit School Services, agreed that smart cameras play a key role in helping districts highlight safe and potentially unsafe behaviors.
