Florida Student Hit by Car When Boarding School Bus

stnonline.com/go/pj

I once had a truck go around my bus just as my student was getting ready to step down. I had to physically grab the child and pull them back to keep them from getting hit. The mother was at the front door of the house but was too far away to be able to do anything but watch. The next day I was met at the bus by the mother. I thought she was going to try to yell at me for touching her child. But she asked permission to step up onto the bus, which I gave. She hugged me and thanked me for grabbing her

child before they got hit. She told me that she watched the whole thing from the front door, and she thought for sure the child was going to get hit. She even emailed the school, letting them know what transpired and how grateful she was that I was paying attention.

Here in Ohio, they passed the law where you have to hold the right- hand [drop off] student back with a hand signal while you check your mirrors to make sure nobody’s passing on the right-hand side of the bus!

It’s a good idea to teach your kids on the bus to put their phones away while boarding and off-boarding. Also, until they are safely home. Not saying that boy had one, [but] it’s becoming more and more prevalent that students get on the bus, never look up during the trip, then walk down the aisle looking at the phone, go down the steps on the phone, then cross in front of the bus at their stop, still on their phone! Even after the student gets off safely, they are a target for someone to approach them because they are more interested of what on the phone than some weirdo approaching them. Safety is what all bus drivers have to teach these kiddos. Now, step up the pace regarding these phones. I do on my route.
