Clean Cities Celebrates 30 Years Of Advancing Clean Transportation Solutions Clean Cities is celebrating 30 years of boosting the country’s energy secu-

rity, economic vitality, and quality of life by advancing affordable, efficient, and clean transportation fuels and technologies. More than 75 Clean Cities coali- tions act locally in urban, suburban, and rural communities to help fleets and communities meet their climate, financial, and energy goals. The network has deep connections within the transportation industry, and active partnerships with 20,000 public and private stakeholders including school bus fleets. Coalitions have a 30-year history of facilitating change, working to understand fleet needs and opportunities, tailoring projects to meet their goals, and facilitating project success with technical assistance. As the U.S. Department of Energy Vehicle Technologies Office’s deployment arm, coalitions leverage expertise from federal agen- cies, national laboratories, and other coalitions. “Coalitions work in their communities to understand local priorities and offer resources and expertise backed by real-world experience,” said Mark Smith, Vehicle Technologies Office Technology Integration Program Manager. “Clean Cities is transforming transportation by bringing the latest technologies to the streets and providing technical assistance with lasting results.” Collectively, Clean Cities coalitions have saved the equivalent of 13 billion gallons of gasoline and eliminated 67 million tons of emissions through projects using alternative fuels and fuel-efficient strategies. Coalitions are also instrumental in expanding alternative fuel infrastructure, with more than 61,000 U.S. fueling and charging stations today. Technical Assistance for School Bus Fleets

Clean Cities provides technical assistance to school bus fleets by guiding them to the best resources for their needs, including: • Flipping the Switch on Electric School Buses, an online technical assistance series developed by deployment experts at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (afdc.energy.gov/vehicles/electric_ school_buses.html)

• Clean School Bus Technical Assistance concierge service, which provides direct support for school bus fleets deploying clean school buses with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program

• Technical assistance from experts at U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. Clean Cities School Bus Case Studies Thirty-Four Electric School Buses on the Road in Maine

Maine Clean Communities secured $13.3 million to help purchase 34 electric school buses for local districts. The buses improve access to reliable transportation in rural communities and improve local air quality. Through this effort, the island community of Vinalhaven purchased an electric bus as its first-ever school bus. The coalition conducted community outreach to promote Clean School Bus Program rebates, sparking regional interest. Tribe Deploys First Electric School Bus in North Carolina The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians deployed North Carolina’s first electric school bus, in partnership with the Cherokee Boys Club and Land of Sky Clean Vehicles Coalition. This project was driven by the tribe’s respect for the land, the people, the mountains, the air, and their desire to find new ways to be good stewards of their resources. The tribe purchased the bus using Volkswagen Settlement funds, and project partners celebrated the vehicle’s arrival with a drag race where the chief drove an electric school bus against a diesel counterpart—winning most of the day’s races. Representatives from six school districts attended the event to experience the potential of new technologies. Land of Sky leveraged the opportunity to learn about perceived barriers to electric bus adoption and how Clean Cities can continue to serve as conveners and help close technology and funding gaps. More Than 20 School Districts Choose Propane School Buses Eastern Pennsylvania Alliance for Clean Transportation and Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities worked with more than 20 school districts throughout Pennsylvania to deploy 1,000 propane school buses, making the state third in the nation for alternative fuel buses on the road. Thousands of students have ridden these buses in their five years on the road. The coalitions continue to educate fleets on benefits of propane school buses—the increased visibility of buses and opportunities to ride them is spurring further adoption.
