Griffiths said. “It created efficiencies that instead of get- ting four PMs done a day, they could get five PMs done a day or six PMs, depending on the number of technicians in the shop.” That evolved into a standard training reg- imen. “We said we don’t care if you’ve been here for 20 years or two months, everybody is going to learn how to do a PM the Beacon way. The checklists were built into FleetWave, and when we did that, we created [a] culture of consistency. The technicians appreciated it. Also, if you have to move a technician from one location to another, they don’t have to learn a new process.” Griffiths said the tablets used by the technicians are a

maintenance interface and an extension of FleetWave, but with a mobile application. “Since last August, we’ve implemented it in 13 compa-

nies, 62 garages, and we have more than 350 technicians using tablets,’ Griffiths explained. “Tablets give them real-time access to vehicle history, repair procedures, checklists, and access to the telematics. It allows them to upload pictures into the system for review and we can do repair analysis. “It also keeps track of their timecards and so when they

log into the system it tracks everything they do during the course of the day,” he continued. “We are creating what I’ve dubbed the enhanced technician. They can connect to some vehicles through Bluetooth.” Griffith said that while the vision and strategy is his, it’s the team that executes the plan. “That’s something that should not get lost in all of this,” he said. “As we’ve done this, it’s really been a team effort.” FleetWave was developed by UK-based Chevin Solu-

tions, whose U.S. headquarters is in Massachusetts. “FleetWave is more than just a maintenance database, it’s connected to all the systems within the company,” Grif- fiths explained. “[It’s] connected with fuel management, to GPS, human resources, finance, and the routing sys- tem. That information gets fed into it. We realize these tools are going to help Beacon be the best it can be.” Another AI tool used by Griffiths is DriveCam, an external camera system by Lytx. Griffiths said it helps promote safe driving habits and reduces risk by correct- ing driver behavior using audio in real time.
