He said the amendment to the CSBP will help contractors go green more easily. He shared that during last year’s first-round rebate last, Beacon submit-
ted with a partner school district in Lawrence, Massachusetts and won 25 electric school buses and infrastructure for that site. Additionally, he shared that Beacon was connected to a $2.5 million award to help electrify another 12 vehicles through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center program. “I think it gives contractors the ability to really engage with their business partner and come up with a solution that’ll help do what the money was intended for, which is to be better stewards to our environment, and then put more electric school buses on the ground,” he explained of the CSBP round 2. He said Beacon’s goal is to electrify two-thirds of its fleet over the next 10
years, and the grants available will help achieve that. However, John Benish, Jr., the president and chief operating officer at
Cook-Illinois Corporation, said his Chicagoland company is not focused on achieving an end goal when it comes to fleet makeup. “With this year’s round of grants, I think they’re trying to stretch it, where they’re not look- ing for people to buy three or four. They’re looking for people to buy 20 to 25 [buses] at a time,” said the past-president of the National School Trans- portation Association. “We want to put the right fit at the right company and on the right routes … if we can increase anywhere from 10 to 20 buses a year, that would be just fine.”

Last month, school bus contractor Zum announced it won a five-year, 250-bus transportation contract with Howard County Public School System in Maryland. A Zum spokesperson told School Transportation News the company plans to work with the district to transition the entire school bus fleet to electric within the next five years.
Beginning with fiscal year 2025, a state law enacted last summer requires county boards of education to only enter new transportation contracts that include purchasing zero-emission school buses and prohibits the use of any school bus that is not zero emissions, unless it has an in- service date of July 1, 2024, or prior.
