The video system uses a combination of artificial intelligence with machine vision telematics to detect unsafe driver behavior and performance. It also sig- nals opportunities to coach drivers to improve their performance. Through the end of October, DriveCam was installed in all 15,000 school buses that are operated by Durham School Services, National Express’ largest U.S. holding and the operator of the ill-fated Chattanooga bus. Meanwhile, 82 percent of all Nation-


al Express school buses that operate at 600 school districts across North America, or 18,460 out of 22,500, are now equipped with DriveCam. (Editor’s Note: National Express also operates Petermann Bus in the U.S. and Stock Transportation in Canada.) Edward P. Flavin, director of com- munications for National Express, said


the installation typically takes one to two hours, depending on the make and model. Flavin said that all company school bus drivers also receive training and orientation, as do location manag- ers, so they can coach more effectively. Lytx uses verified, third-party partners across the U.S. and Canada to perform the installations, the company explained to School Transportation News. In National Express’ case, global technology deployment and project management provider Velociti performed the initial installations, said Lytx spokesman Steven Sylvio. He shared that Lytx also uses its


verified, third-party partners to provide additional alternatives, such as pre-wir- ing vehicles, to ease installation. Lytx customers can also choose to perform their own installations. As far as training, Sylvio said Lytx ap-

National Express said installing the DriveCam surveillance monitoring system from Lytx has reduced school bus driver “risk scores” by 46 percent and “events” by 44 percent, when comparing operations performed from June through August 2018 and the same period in 2019, as a result of the installation.
