ents and the general public. The superintendent and the human resources department would handle our public relations and media relations.” Ellison said the safety director at Eugene School

District 4J directs all emergency procedures involv- ing schools and works with four school resource officers. He said the safety director is a credentialed law enforcement officer but not a member of the Eugene Police Department. The safety director’s committee during an emergency, Ellison explained, would be the local police and fire departments. A group that includes the safety director, the school resource officer supervisor, the police de- partment, transportation director, the directors of elementary and secondary education, the commu- nications director, and the facilities director are the main players handling the updates of the emergen- cy response plan, he continued. In an emergency involving a school bus, Ellison said that he would provide all information to the

safety director and communications director, who would then handle the dissemination of information to the media and community. “If there is a bus accident, I would feed infor-

mation to the communications director and the superintendent so he could notify the school board immediately,” Ellison explained. “If there are students on board, I will always notify the superintendent. But if the bus is empty and it’s a fender-bender, I don’t communicate that. If there are students on board, the school notifies the parents. It’s a team effort.”
