Q&A

hances the student rider experience. The initial feedback from our customers and student riders is very positive.

STN: What main initiatives are the company targeting

the remainder of this year? And what is it targeting in 2021? Osland: We have several exciting initiatives under-

way—one I’m particularly excited about is our new DriverHub. This is a tablet-based system that enhances our driver’s abilities to, for example, identify mainte- nance issues quickly, check for sleeping children, and receive turn-by-turn directions. It turns chess into checkers, aggregating data from

many sources in a way that is actionable for our teams. It’s straightforward for the end-users, our drivers and local operations leadership. This isn’t just about how a tablet can guide a driver

through a route. This is about how we can do it in the safest way possible to benefit our customers and com- munities.

STN: You were just in San Diego for the National Con-

ference on Education and the awarding of the National Superintendent of the Year. Was this your first official visit as First Student president, and what impressed you

most about meeting with winner Gustavo Balderas? The other superintendents you met?

Osland: This was my initial visit to the National

Conference on Education as First Student’s president. All 50 state winners along with the other three final- ists—Dr. Michael Nagler, Samantha Fuhrey and Dr. Jeffery Smith—are impressive educators. It’s clear they are passionate champions for their students and their communities. I enjoyed meeting each of them. Dr. [Gustavo] Balderas impressed me as a thoughtful,

non-assuming leader who makes students his top prior- ity. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Balderas said, “This is a we award, not a me award.” I thought this speaks volumes about who he is, not only as a leader and educator, but as a person. I was also impressed by the appreciation he has for non-instructional services, including transportation. First Student is proud to be a partner in the Super-

intendent of the Year award. Recognizing outstanding educators is a key priority for us, and we appreciate and admire superintendents as they relentlessly pursue the success of all students.

STN: Thank you. ●
