“I want people to think that they can put themselves

in the scene and travel through the story,” he said. “It’s much more about the feeling and the passion behind what I was feeling at the moment.” Quartly described his style further: “ I would say there’s a lot of classic post-impres- sionism … My strokes are on the bolder side.” Steven puts much effort

into prepping the canvas.

He likes to build up textures. Often sketching a scene in white gesso with a palette knife he might also add a wash. Sometimes he needs to use sheets of birch instead of canvas due to a lot of scraping, heavy textures, many layers and hard brush strokes. Quartly uses a full spectrum of color. “When I look at

a sky, it’s just not a palette knife of blue,” he said. “I’m using prussian, carillion, cobalt, pinks, whites.” He throws himself into creating his works. Describing

the process as being highly emotional he says he is totally exhausted when finished with each session. Quartly brings his incredibly romantic style to a

Valentine’s weekend showing at Exclusive Collections Galleries this winter.
