MLE – AN ATTRACTIVE GATEWAY FOR FREIGHTERS


The primary gateway to the Maldives (MLE) has long been central to the country’s air transport network, driven by its tourism-led economy. This growth has shaped a unique network where major global carriers converge, positioning MLE as a well-connected gateway between South Asia and international markets.


Building on this foundation, the development of dedicated cargo infrastructure has further strengthened Velana International Airport’s role as a transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean. Faster turnaround times, availability of slots for dedicated freighters, and consistent cargo flows have enhanced its operational appeal.


Recent disruptions across traditional Middle Eastern cargo corridors have reshaped logistics. Gulf carriers, which previously accounted for a significant share of belly hold and freighter capacity between South Asia, Europe and US have scaled back operations, creating immediate pressure on space and routing. As a result, operators are actively seeking alternatives that can offer both reliability and commercial viability.


In this shifting landscape, MLE has emerged as a point of ease. Its strategic location and diversified airline network have enabled it to absorb displaced demand, particularly for cargo moving between South Asia, Europe, CIS, and wider Asia. At the same time, the airport remains focused on what matters most to freight forwarders: efficient handling, shorter transit times, and minimal congestion.


Freighters growth at MLE


Freighter connectivity continues to expand steadily. In 2025, MLE has handled over 4,300 tonnes of freighter cargo, primarily linking South Asian origins to CIS, Europe and North America. With Hyderabad operations introduced in March 2026, the network now includes key gateways such as Colombo, Bangalore and Chennai. Plans are also underway to extend connectivity to Bangladesh, Hong Kong, China, and fast-growing Southeast Asian markets, including Vietnam.


Scheduled freighter services at MLE are currently operated by AFCOM Cargo. In addition, the airport has welcomed charter freighter operations from carriers such as MJets, Fly Vaayu, and MNG Airlines, connecting MLE to major cargo hubs including Hong Kong, Dubai, and Ho Chi Minh City, and further strengthening its expanding network.


To further strengthen its position, MLE has introduced a freighter incentive scheme which greatly reduces the airport charges up to 80 - 100% based on the route and volume of transshipment. Our collaborations continue to explore how MLE can best support freighters and forwarders can choose MLE as an alternative, cost effective hub in the Indian ocean.


Record-breaking Q1


This strong operational foundation is translating into measurable growth. In the first quarter of 2026, MLE recorded 4,277 tonnes of transshipment cargo, marking a 23% year-on-year increase. March stood out in particular, connecting 1,868 tonnes, up 58% compared to the same period last year. The airport also recorded over 160 freighter movements in March, it’s highest to date, reflecting growing confidence among operators.


As global supply chains continue to evolve, MLE is positioning itself as more than just a gateway for passengers, but also for cargo moving across the continents. And become operationally, and commercially attractive for freighters.
