Education & Training

Many of our UK training centres have reported their busiest season to date, with many centres at full capacity throughout the summer months. With safety a priority we have continued to focus on guidance, education and awareness, as well as promoting our training courses and publications. Reports and sales of certificates and course packs reflect this positive trend.

the challenges insurmountable and have closed. Work with the UK Government and industry bodies was successful in some areas, with unfavourable post-Brexit regulations in Spain modified early in 2021 to allow most RYA recognised training centres to remain open.

As training centres continue to recover slowly from the pandemic it has inevitably led to a reduction in our instructor numbers and oversubscribed courses.

A combination of the lingering effects of Coronavirus and the impact of Brexit meant a more challenging year for many of our training centres in mainland Europe. While most have adapted well by identifying new markets or changing their business model, unfortunately a small number have found

the increased demand for training, we are working hard to bring on board new instructors and to requalify those whose qualifications have lapsed. We anticipate instructor

numbers returning to pre-

pandemic levels over the next two to three years.

Further streamlining of processes has continued to improve efficiencies. Virtual inspections of training centres continued through 2021-22 to maintain our inspection regime and comply with travel restrictions both locally and internationally. Revalidations for a range of appointment holders have also been conducted via video link, a move that has proven popular.

We began the development of a Quality Management System. This will eventually cover all aspects of RYA training and

certification that have relationships with the MCA as the UK regulator. We are also delighted to report that following a successful tender submission the RYA has been awarded the contract for the provision of SRC Training courses and Certification for a further five years. This is an important revenue stream for the more than 600 RYA recognised training centres that provide this service.

Work has begun on modernising RYA shorebased navigation courses to reflect current navigation practices. A review of the

syllabi, creation of updated course

material and communication of changes to our training network will run through this year and into 2023. This change is essential to ensure our courses remain current and relevant. Details will begin to roll out to our instructor and training centre network later this year.

In the rapidly changing market of digital publishing, we continue to evolve our digital publications with the expansion of our range of audio books and improved accessibility of our eBooks. We also ensure our products keep up with the many distribution channels and remain available to the widest audience possible, brand.

Our focus for 2022-23 remains on improving the diversity of our instructor base to ensure that RYA training better reflects our diverse society. Appointments to

both
