Boating Safety
As more people chose to get afloat and enjoy boating in the UK we heightened our safety messages, urging boaters to understand the risks and the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency.
Our collaboration with industry partners such as the MCA, MAIB and RNLI saw us play a leading role in the development of boating safety education and solutions. Notably, we delivered a number of personal watercraft safety initiatives working in partnership with the Personal Watercraft Partnership,
British Marine, UK Harbour Authorities and British Ports Association.
We also successfully applied for funding from the Department
for Transport to
produce a series of safety campaign videos and to promote some of our popular existing safety videos to a wider audience.
Ahead of the holiday season, we supported the Broads Authority on the delivery of a new series of safety videos to help inform those hiring boats on how to stay safe. The new ‘how to’ boating videos are intended for new hirers and private boat owners.
Our response to the public consultation on strengthening the enforcement of the dangerous use of recreational and personal watercraft saw us broadly supportive of its intent. We have also promoted the new online UK 406MHz Beacon Registry.
The RYA Safety Management Group meets regularly to discuss on the water safety issues and to raise awareness of the lessons learned from MAIB investigation reports on leisure boating incidents.
We also analyse trends from incidents that are reported to us in order to improve safety and to continuously improve the content of our training schemes and publications.
