13 RUNNING REPAIRS
■ Multimeter − preferably the digital type which is easier to read with your head down in the engine bay.
■ Wire strippers and crimpers, either as separate implements or a multi-purpose tool.
■ Hydrometer for testing battery charge − only appropriate if your batteries are liquid lead acid type with accessible cells. If not you will have to rely on your multimeter.
Engine spares ■ Oil for engine and gearbox ■ Oil filter ■ Fuel filters − one spare element or cartridge for each. ■ Various greases for pumps, stern glands and general use. ■ Penetrating oil in an aerosol can ■ Pump impellers − particularly for the raw water cooling pump. ■ Spark plugs – a complete set. ■ Thermostats. Some engines have more than one, so check the manual. ■ Belts − at least one spare of each. ■ Hoses ■ Gasket material and sealant ■ PTFE tape
Electrical spares ■ Spare crimp of connectors in a variety of sizes. ■ Fuses ■ De-ionised water for battery top-up (if appropriate) ■ Insulating tape ■ Petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
Bleeding the fuel system
Much has been said about how forgiving diesels are, but one thing they won’t tolerate is air in the fuel system. Air can enter for a number of reasons – running out of fuel or servicing or replacement of components being common causes. Although some engines claim to be self-purging, most need outside intervention.
The exact sequence may vary from engine to engine, but the one described here is typical. It involves filling the system with fuel from tank to injectors, usually by manually operating the lift pump. Simple? Of course!
