ENGINES AND PROPULSION 2 Outboard motors

There is no significance in the fact that we are now talking ‘motors’ rather than engines – though the distinction probably arose because early outboards were relatively feeble beasts. Not any longer. There are now a number of models exceeding 200hp (270kW) – far more powerful than many inboards.

The characteristic all outboard motors share is that the power head, gearbox and prop are combined in a single assembly – usually clad in a sleek casing. The smallest ones also have built-in fuel tanks. This integrated approach makes them exceptionally easy to fit. You simply mount them on the stern, connect up the controls, fuel supply and electrics (as appropriate) and you’re in business. Smaller outboards are also portable. You can

take them home in the back of your car at the end of your day’s fishing. Outboard motors do more then just propel the boat – they steer it as well. This is achieved by swivelling the whole unit so the thrust from the prop pushes the stern to one side or the other. Most can also be tilted, either to influence the trim of the boat or to stow the outboard with the prop clear of the water.

Although there are a few diesel outboards to be found, the overwhelming majority are petrol fuelled. Inboard/outboards

This hybrid arrangement combines inboard engines with outboard drive legs – the latter often called ‘stern drives’ or ‘outdrives’. Larger and more powerful engines (up to about 400hp (538kW)) can be fitted and, because these are carried low in the boat, their weight improves rather than reduces stability. Stern drives can be steered and tilted in much the same way as outboards. The engines can be either diesel or petrol.
