Vessels at work ■ Fishing vessels (except trawlers) carry the usual sidelights and sternlight for power vessels under way with two additional lights – an all-round red


mounted above an all-round white. By day they show a couple of cones mounted apex to apex. Fog:


every two minutes.


■ When trawling, a vessel carries an all-round green light over a white light, along with the usual sidelights and sternlight for a power vessel under way. The day shapes are two cones as above. Fog:


every two minutes.


■ Dredgers show the same vertical red, white, red lights as vessels restricted in their ability to manoeuvre, plus two vertical reds and two vertical greens at either side. The green lights indicate which side is safe to pass. The day shapes are, again, the same as our RAM, plus two balls and two diamonds at either side. The diamonds indicate the safe side. Fog:


every two minutes.


■ It’s important to recognise a towing operation because you can’t always see the towrope which may be partially immersed. The lights and shapes depend on the overall length of the tow – measured from the stern of the tug to the after end of the tow.


Less than 200m: Along with the usual power vessel lights, the tug carries a second white masthead light and a yellow towing light above the sternlight and displaying over the same arc. The tow shows sidelights and sternlight.


Over 200m: As above but with a third masthead light. By day tug and tow each show a black diamond shape. Fog:
