Motoring upwind Uncomfortable, but safer. Now the wave crest’s surface flow will slow you down and increase steerageway. Ease off a little as you punch through the crest, then accelerate down the back of the wave ready for the next one.
It’s often easier to steer a zigzag course at about 30°–40° to the wind. This has the effect of lengthening the distance between crests, thereby giving you more time to adjust your speed.
IMPORTANT!! Try and keep as warm and dry as possible. The combination of wet clothing and wind chill can seriously reduce both morale and efficiency. And, if all on board are not wearing them already, you should dig out the lifejackets.
