Receiving a DSC group call
A DSC controller that has been programmed with a Group MMSI will respond to calls addressed to the Group MMSI as well as to individual calls addressed to its own MMSI.
The alarm sound may be different, but a more significant point is that “acknowledging” a Group call will only mute the alarm and switch your receiver to the specified working channel: it will not send an acknowledgement to the calling vessel.
Using a Class A or B controller
If an SRC operator finds himself using a Class A or B controller, it is important to bear in mind that the equipment is capable of carrying out some operations that have been deliberately removed from the options available on a Class D controller.
In particular, you should NOT:-
Use DSC to relay distress messages (use the Mayday Relay procedure on page 51 instead);
Use DSC to acknowledge distress messages (use voice procedure on page 49 instead).
