Medical advice


One special case of an Urgency Call deals with situations in which you are asking for medical advice.


It involves a Panpan call, but addressed to the Coastguard, rather than to All Stations. The associated message can be reduced to “request medical advice”:-


“Panpan, Panpan, Panpan.


Clyde Coastguard, Clyde Coastguard, Clyde Coastguard, this is Sheherazade, Sheherazade, Sheherazade, Victor, Sierra, Alpha, Foxtrot, Three, MMSI 235362197.


Request urgent medical advice. Over.”


What happens next is largely in the hands of the Coastguard. Around the UK, you can expect to be asked to transfer to a duplex working channel, such as 23, 84, or 86, where you will be linked to a hospital doctor who has been specially trained to give advice by radio to casualties at sea. While the call is being connected, the Coastguard is also likely to ask for more information about the vessel and its position, in case the request for advice escalates into a need for a helicopter or lifeboat.


 


The proword “Panpan Medico”, referred to in some old reference books, is no longer used. The proword “Medical” is still used, but only in the context of medical transports in war.
