Coast Station Licences


Shore-based premises, such as marinas and sailing clubs will not be issued with ship radio licences, even though they have a legitimate need to use marine VHF. To cater for them, there are a number of different types of Coast Station Licences.


Coast Station Licences are also issued by Ofcom but they are not free and are subject to more stringent limitations than Ship Radio Licences.


Coastal Station Radio (UK) licences are used by organisations, which need to be able to communicate between a base station and their own vessels using a “private” channel. The fee for a CSR(UK) Licence is £180 per channel per year.


Coastal Station Radio (International) licences are used mainly by harbour authorities and the like, to communicate between a base station ashore and any vessel with a conventional marine VHF, using one or more designated channels (frequencies). The licence fee is £100 per channel per year.


Coastal Station Radio (Marina) licences are useful for sailing clubs as well as for commercial marinas, as they allow the use of three channels (M, M2, and 80) for the relatively modest fee of £75 per year.


Coastal Station Radio (Training School) licences are for exactly what the name suggests: they allow maritime colleges and training centres to use “live” marine radio equipment, for training purposes only, for a fee of £50 per year.


Maritime Radio (Suppliers and Demonstration) licences also cost £50 per year, and allow businesses to install, test, repair and demonstrate marine radios in their shops or workshops and on customers’ boats in harbour or ashore.
