Dimmer


All radios need an illuminated display and controls if they are to be worked at night. A bright screen, however, can be dazzling, so any radio should have lighting that can be reduced or increased as required.


Switching on and setting up 


Suppose we want to make a call to a marina, a couple of miles away, on Channel 80.


1. Switch the power supply to the radio on


2. Adjust the dimmer switch if necessary, to illuminate the display and controls


3. Turn the squelch right down, to produce a frying sound from the loudspeaker


4. Adjust the volume control until the frying sound is loud but tolerable


5. Adjust the squelch control until the frying sound just stops


6. Use the channel selector to select Channel 80


7. Select low transmitter power


8. LISTEN, to make sure the channel is not in use


9. Press the PTT to speak


 


10. Release the PTT to listen for a reply.
