Points of Excellence

Just ask Tia Richardson, a senior accounting major from Cincinnati, whose responsibilities included reviews of residential consumer loans and construction loans documentation. “I never imagined this experience would provide me an opportunity to impact critical banking decisions,” she says.

Richardson says her internship gave her a glimpse of life after college.

The curriculum, further refined this year with input from the OBL, covered a variety of aspects and functions of universal banking, such as retail

“Thanks to our faculty, I felt well- prepared going into this position,” she says. “I feel so fortunate to be a CSU business student. What I learned in the program enabled me to confidently interact with banking professionals.”

The program also addresses a critical need in Ohio’s banking workforce to provide not only future workers to fill an estimated 20,000 jobs over the next ten years, according to the Ohio Banker’s Foundation, but to diversify that workforce as well. The Institute was so effective the first year that all ten interns received job offers from the banks where they worked.

banking and mortgage lending, marketing, accounting, compliance, and commercial banking and lending. Upon successful completion of the program, students received three credit hours plus a certificate in universal banking.

It was exactly this kind of real-world experience that intrigued Makih Yett, a third-year accounting major also from Cincinnati. “I heard about the program from friends who had participated,” he says. “Through my assignments, I was able to learn a lot about banking and the career opportunities in the banking sector.”

Juniors and seniors from all disciplines at CSU may apply for the internship, but the program is very competitive, with not all applicants accepted. In addition to students from the College of Business, this year’s class included students with majors in communications, criminal justice, and social work. The 2018 participating banks included Union Savings Bank, Guardian Savings Bank, Park National Bank of Southwest Ohio & Kentucky, LCNB, First National Bank, Peoples Bank, and Monroe Federal.

The Summer Banking Institute is just the latest example of a successful partnership with area businesses and organizations that enhance the University’s educational effectiveness. “I give a lot of credit to Louis Beck of USB,” says Dr. Ikem. “As this program grows, we could become a destination school for training future bank employees for the state of Ohio. He’s been a major part of driving us toward this goal.”

The College of Business Summer Banking Institute maximizes these collaborations by recognizing and offering exceptional business students opportunities to establish their career path in a promising and dynamic industry.
