Community Connections

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program™, is an education curriculum designed to help people with pre- diabetes and diabetes, as well as relatives and caregivers. “We’re trying to reach the entire family unit to help educate them how to prevent the disease and manage it,” says

Franklin County. Additional classes are planned after the first of the year in Greene County at the new YMCA REACH Center and at the Trotwood Community Center in Montgomery County.

Diverse opportunities are offered to young people to develop social, leadership, and critical thinking skills in the areas of science, technology, engineering, agriculture, and math.

Mary Kershaw, family and consumer sciences program leader for the CSU Extension.

This in-depth program addresses diabetes prevention, management, complications, simple lifestyle changes, and food preparation. Classes are held once a week, from one to two hours, for six weeks. At each workshop, 10 to 15 participants are provided with detailed information from risk factors to controlling the disease through better nutrition and exercise to learning about medications, tests, and medical care.

Medicare provided the training for all of the class facilitators, in addition to the necessary classroom materials. The goal is to reach Medicare and Medicaid recipients, individuals with limited income, and underserved populations.

The next workshop is slated to begin on November 12 in Columbus and will be facilitated by Renita Porter, family, and consumer sciences educator,
