POINTS OF EXCELLENCE

Real-Life Work Experiences in Banking Benefits Business Students

CSU’s innovative summer internship program was recognized as a top business program by HBCU Digest.

Students majoring in business and other disciplines at Central State University not only receive an outstanding education, but they’re also given opportunities for on-the- job training and work experiences in collaborative internships with businesses and organizations. An innovative banking internship program, initially developed last year with Union Savings Bank (USB), was awarded HBCU Digest’s 2018 Business Program of the Year.

CSU’s Summer Banking Institute combines in-depth classroom instruction with paid summer internships at area banks for a solid, experiential first-look at a career in

banking. The program is the brainchild of CSU’s President Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond in collaboration with Louis Beck, chairman of USB. The curriculum was developed by Dr. Fidelis Ikem, dean, and other faculty members from the College of Business, with input from bankers at USB.

The Institute was launched in 2017 with just 10 students. This year, with the addition of another partner, the Ohio Bankers League (OBL), 23 students were part of the 10-week program. Students spent eight hours a day for four weeks in the classroom, followed by a six-week internship working fulltime at one of seven participating banks around Southwest Ohio.

A vital part of the Central State experience is experiential learning. Internships offer a real-world setting for connecting academic learning with

the workplace. This internship allows students to explore a career path in banking before committing to it, develop networking and other career skills, and expand learning beyond the classroom. The program expectations were designed to educate, challenge, and motivate students to perform at the highest level.

“This program is ideal for any student wanting to gain experience and insight for their future career in the banking sectors of finance, accounting, internal auditing, or regulatory affairs,” says Keith L. Borders, vice president of Community Development, Union Savings Bank and Guardian Savings Bank. “They will learn key skills needed to work at the heart of a banking institution. It’s also a fantastic addition to a student’s resume for their graduate and post-graduate job search.”
