From Our Founder
Remembering September and October 1987
The big news in our Sep-
tember and October 1987 is- sues was that Kemptville College cancelled it’s Equine courses as a result of a planned destruction of the course. After having 150 en- quiries and the college’s pro- crastination the college administration cancelled the course. After pressure they re- stored the equine course and hired an instructor but only had 11 students enrol. The course was cancelled again and the instructor removed. It
would appear at the time that it was a plan to expand the bovine courses. The College was funded by the OMAF.
The richest Quarter Horse
race in Canada was held at Picov Downs in Ajax. The Rags to Riches Futurity had a purse of $30,032. The winner was Bee A Sabre, owned and bred by Jane Mucklestone, and trained by Marg Macaulay and ridden by Deb- bie Barbour. Yes you read it correctly.
The Heritage Classic Cir-
cuit Championship Show was held under the authority of the Ontario Equestrian Federa- tion. 47 horses qualified for the designated classes with 99 entries. Mayor Art Eggleton of Toronto was on hand for the opening ceremonies. In 1982 Sports Canada officially designated Western Disci- pline as a Heritage Sport.
The National Snaffle Bit
Association sanctioned it’s first event in Western Canada at the Canadian National Quarter Horse show in Leth- bridge, Alberta on October 7- 11.
WW Ranch held their an-
nual fall Thoroughbred, Quar- ter Horse and all breed consignment sale at LeRoy, New York.
The fourth annual regis-
tered horse sale was held by Shamrock Equine sales in Cambridge on Saturday, Sep- tember 26.
The WHAO introduced
it’s new rules for the 1988 horse show season.
Melanie Sundermier was
featured in the WHAO judges profile. Flamboro Downs fea- tured Ben Hur and Chuck
Here we were in October
1987 and the Quarterama show preparations were well under way. With $40,000 in added money and $200,000 in prize money as well as a pre- diction that 1,200 horses would register. The show was well on it’s way to be the largest horse show in Canada.
Quartermaster a 10 year
old American Quarter horse gelding ridden by Mike Huber claimed GOLD at the Pan American Games. The three day event was held at Indianapolis. This Quarter Horse bested a strong field of Olympic hopefuls in the gru- elling 3 day event.

Obituary Gloria (Diceman) Egerton
August 11, 2021 Gloria Egerton, wife of the late George
Egerton, passed peacefully at her home with her best friend Peggy Burne at her bedside on August 11, 2021. Born in 1945, in Concord, Ontario, daughter of the late Matilda and George Diceman. Sister to Peggy, Wilfred, Sandra, Kevin,
Kenny, James, Cindy and the late Roy. Loving mother to Denise, Kelly and Cathy;
grandmother to Chantal Lynn and great-grand- mother to Lincoln. Gloria’s love of horses from a young age led
her to Own, Breed and Race Quarterhorses with her beloved husband George. She and George were well known at Quarterama, Picov Downs and OBRA shows. You could always hear Gloria cheering her horses on at the track and show ring. She will be sadly missed by her many friends
and family. Private ceremony will be held at a later date. Photos, memories and condolences can be
shared at

the story on Kemptville Col- lage’s cancellation of the Equine program The Rider was swamped with a barrage of letters condemning the equine course closure.
The Christie Conserva-
tion Area hosted the Tri- County Carriage Association as they showed off their lov- ingly restored carriages with their teams of very well trained horses.
With October now here
the QROOI were winding down their racing season.
My Turn It is with sadness that I
should have to report to the equine industry that we lost one of our best supporters of the horses in Ontario. Gloria Egerton passed away on Au- gust 11th. See her obituary printed above. Gloria, we will miss you!
Well it is time for me to
gripe about commercials again. I have now have three commercials in my sights for the worst pitchmen on Cana- dian TV. No. 1 for the second year
in a row has to be the obnox- ious pitchman from Sure Health. No. 2 is the Phoney Doc-
tor (the new one on the air) is a condescending voiced pitch- man for Canada Care Life. Stick a stethoscope around the
neck and put on a hospital gown and you have your phoney quack. Give me a break. No. 3 is the woman that
hides out in the women’s washrooms. This one must upset all that watch.
Please remember as we
approach what appears to be a horrendous winter, with the COVID-19 and the deniers and the unnecessary harass- ment of our Front Line care givers, that this is not how Canadians should act. I just wonder who is the inspiration behind these demonstrations on COVID-19 and our politi- cians. Is it Communist China or Communist Russia?
Thanks for looking down
in this corner. I do like receiv- ing comments on the column as it is a look back at our in- dustry history and it’s people over the past 51 years. Thank you for your support. A reminder that you are responsible to report abuse to elders, children spouses and animals.
Thanks for looking down in this corner…
