AQHA Director’s Report
By Kathy M. Patterson AQHA Director
AQHA Hires Director of International Activities The American Quarter
Horse Association is pleased to announce that Tate Eck has been named director of international activities. Eck began his new role on May 1. “The love of the Ameri- can Quarter Horse was in- stilled in me at a young age by my aunt who bred, raised and trained them for the rodeo and show arenas. I was given the opportunity to take my gift of teaching and
my love of the horse to an international level as a clini- cian for the AQHA Educa- tional Marketplace,” said Eck. “During these trips to Europe, I witnessed a new enthusiasm and desire to learn about the Quarter Horse and our western her- itage. Promoting the Ameri- can Quarter Horse on an international scale will be an honour. I look forward to meeting and working with the international affiliates and advancing AQHA into the future.” As the director of international activities, Eck will be responsible for AQHA’s international mem- ber support by providing ac- tivities of value to the international membership through partnerships with AQHA international affili- ates, U. S. Livestock Genet- ics Export (USLGE)/ United States Department of Agri- culture cooperator contract and programs sponsored through AQHA, such as Ed- ucational Marketplace. He will oversee policies and procedures to provide an overall direction of AQHA’s international affairs. Addi- tionally, Eck will assist with maintaining and advancing AQHA’s international mar- ket by continuously examin-
ing, locating and developing international business rela- tionships. “We are proud to have Tate on board to serve our international members and their American Quarter Horses,” said Karl Stress- man, AQHA chief executive officer. “He brings a broad skill set to the table along- side a long history of equine knowledge, and understands where our
international
members are coming from. We do business in over 90 countries and serve approx- imately 31,000 members and 440,000 registered American Quarter Horses and our goal is to provide more services to more mem- bers worldwide.” Eck will lead an enthusiastic team that serves international af- filiates and members, serve as the staff liaison for the AQHA International Com- mittee, organize interna- tional events and travel internationally. Eck re- ceived a master’s degree in agriculture education from North Dakota State Univer- sity and also served as an equine science instructor at NDSU for 15 years. Eck brings over 30 years of ex- perience in equine manage- ment and training. He is an avid supporter of AQHA
and held multiple profes- sional titles, such as the Na- tional Intercollegiate Rodeo Association faculty presi- dent and is an AQHA Pro- fessional Horseman.

2023 AQHA Guidelines and Rules for Drugs and Medications Each year, the Ameri-
can Quarter Horse Associa- tion releases the AQHA Guidelines and Rules for Drugs and Medications. This educational resource is available online to serve as an addition to AQHA’s offi- cial medications rules set
forth in the violations sec- tion of the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations. Be sure to re- view this resource before at- tending
any
AQHA-approved event or show.
This resource includes
advice about understanding the AQHA Equine Drugs and Medications Rules and applying it in practical situ- ations. The purpose is to help accommodate legiti- mate therapy in compliance with the requirements of the rules. It is important to note, these are only guidelines to serve as an educational sup- plement. It is important to consult a licensed veterinar- ian in determining whether a particular substance is re- quired for the welfare of a horse and when determining the dosage appropriate for such horse under AQHA’s rules. The AQHA drug- testing program is designed to ensure that horses com- peting in AQHA competi- tions are doing so in a manner that will promote the safety and well being of all horses competing and the enforcement of fair and eq- uitable rules and procedures. AQHA’s policies concern- ing the administration of
controlled substances are well documented as being among the most stringent in the equine industry. AQHA began drug testing at AQHA-approved shows in 1973 and was among the first, if not the first, equine breed association to do so. For complete informa-
tion on AQHA rules and regulations, view the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and
Regulations at
www.aqha.com/aqha-rule- book.
Disclaimer: Because
the online version of the AQHA Rulebook can be up- dated throughout the year, it should be considered the most-current version of the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations. View more about
