MAY 2023 THE RIDER /13 We Can Hustle: You are what you consume

tion, there are many ways we consume and it’s up to us to choose how to use it for the greater good. Just being curious about the experience the body gives us, realizing the body changes without our consent, it changes, adapts, grows, repro- duces, all these things without us really having a say. It gives us an experience outside of our full control. We don’t need to know exactly how

By Shelby Olyschlager Our body is our portal for

consumption. It absorbs, it feels, it produces, it’s what keeps us here. Throughout the day, there are countless things we consume, some things without even realizing it. Our body processes the content and makes it as good as it can, all for us, for you. To dive in, here are a few questions: Are we aware of how hard our body works for us; day in, day out? Are we taking care of the one thing we really need in order to live here? The body is an in- credible tool, one I think we often take for granted, until of course something comes over our physical health and we re- alize how fragile, special and great it is to be in a healthy body, as opposed to a sick one. For starters, the most basic

form of consumption is food. The food we eat tells a lot about how we view our body. Our body is a machine, just like the vehicles we drive, just like the horses we ride. It does incredible things for us to en- sure it is running on all cylin- ders. The thing is, when we have a vehicle we like, or a horse we want to last a long time; we fuel it with nothing but the best. They eat the best hay, the best supplements, nat- ural grain and we do regular oil changes on our machinery to ensure it is running as smoothly and efficiently as possible. The way anything runs well is by the quality of product going into it. Why does that stop when it comes to ourselves? Our body truly does so much for us. It is a gift we were given that took no ef- fort on our end to acquire.. Did you have to graduate school? Pass a test? Give money to be given this body? Everything on this earth will answer that question with “no”. To honor life, is to honor

ourselves and it starts with the things we choose to put into our body and into our lives. Everything is about consump-

it works or how it fights for us to live, but it does, no matter your beliefs, no matter your location; the body is ours to be ours. It is the one thing we really truly own (even if it is still only temporary). If we can begin to honor our food and

realize what we eat determines how we will live and how we will feel, just like a well oiled machine, we will better our chances of our body taking care of us so we can live the life we want. As far as this gift of a body goes, to honor our body it to honor the one that created it for us. Take good care of it, love it, appreciate it and fuel it with the goodness it needs to make your life as good as it can be. Be- cause without your body, where will you be?

Along with it, we were also given this

gift called free will, we get to decide what we put in front of us to consume. This brings us to the big one that my mind goes to when I think of consuming; it is con- tent. We have different forms of content in front of us all day. The outside world is constantly being absorbed into your inner world. The things we watch, the people we follow; it all affects us. Consuming ac- tually has very little to do with us and it is all about “them”. What they’re doing, how they feel; we are just along for the ride, making no decisions on our own about what to think, these people online

will tell us! If we’re not careful, we can mirror the energy of the things we con- sume, leaving us in the passenger seat. I was thinking of naming the title

“you are what you think”, which is also very true, but where do these thoughts come from? We can, in a way, also be too consumed with thoughts that hinder our progress. So what are these thoughts and why is it so important? We do have control over what we

allow to go on within ourselves, we can choose how we see reality. These thoughts are rolling through our minds nonstop. Sometimes we aren’t even aware, yet they determine so much about how we view and interact with the world. We can let them grab our hand and walk us down whatever path it chooses at that moment. For me, when I am at a barrel race all weekend and when things don’t go totally right; because when do they re- ally do? I know my thoughts can take me to two places; good or bad. If I allowed myself to be consumed by the thoughts I had, I would be at the mercy of my mind. Whenever negativity crept in, self doubt, all the unhelping things, I would be ab- sorbing that just as much as I absorb the nutrition from the food I eat. The beauty in all of this is we have the ability to de- cide what we want to consume, in all as- pects of life. When was the last time you took the

time to really consume your own ideas, your own thoughts? To be mindfully aware of what you are processing in your super computer brain; what is going on in there? Do you take the time to be with your thoughts and your body fully? Not to be your thoughts, but to simply observe them with curiosity. I believe our body is the connection

we all have to a higher power. It’s always been up to us to honor it fully through tak- ing the best care of it, and ourselves as a whole. As you consume throughout your day, ask if this is good for me? Will this bring me closer to my highest self? Does this help me? With life, we can virtually do anything we want with this “meat suit” as I’ve heard it being called before. It’s on our side, it’s rooting for us. Are you on your own side with it?
