Show Season Goals

By Ashley Janzen Spring has sprung, and with it, excitement

about a new show season! Shows are fun and excit- ing, but I like to think of them as a report card - a way to check in to see if what you have been work- ing on is getting you where you want to go. This re- quires you to set goals. According to PositivePsychology.com, “setting goals helps trig- ger new behaviours, helps guide your focus, and helps you sustain that momentum in life. Goals also help align your focus and promote a sense of self- mastery.” There are many ways to measure your progress, depending on the type of goal you set for yourself. Here are some options to consider…what do you want to accomplish this season?

Personal Bests Some exhibitors may have a solid horse, and

want to improve themselves as riders, or further de- velop their partnership with that horse. Others may be working with a green horse, who has a lot to learn. Sometimes these goals can be measured by the way you feel when you exit the show pen, your overall score, or an individual score on a particular maneuvre, rather than your placing in a class on the whole. Your goal might not be a particular score, but just getting a score - i.e. staying on pattern, not getting disqualified. You might aim for a penalty- free ride. Perhaps you just want your horse to keep it together, and get through a pattern without losing its cool! All of these are worthwhile goals, and something to be celebrated when accomplished.

Circuit Awards/Show Specials Many shows have special events and awards

that go with them. This is a good option for ex- hibitors who may not be able to commit to a full season of competition, because they may be based on 1 or 2 show weekends, rather than a culmination of a full season. Examples of this include the Ranch Riding Circuit Award at the ORHA Spring Fling show (kindly sponsored by Erie Wind Stables and SS Performance) and the Rookie Shootout at the ORHA Grand Finale - both of which can be won by participating in just 2 classes over 1 weekend each, as well as J&J Reining Inc’s Youth, Green Reiner, and Rookie Circuit Awards - which are based on participation in 4 classes each over 2 weekends at their Steel City Spin and Steel City Slide shows.

Year End Awards If you can commit to a full season (or most of one!), you

might aspire to win an ORHA Champion Buckle or ORHA Re- serve Champion Award. These prizes are awarded to exhibitors with the greatest overall points/earnings in the following classes, over the course of the season.

• NRHA Green Reiner 1 • NRHA Green Reiner 2 • ORHA Green Reiner

• Rookie L1 • Rookie L2 • PT Rookie

• Youth 14-18 • ORHA Youth Rookie

• Youth 13 & Under

• NRHA Short Stirrup • ORHA Short Stirrup

• Novice Horse Non Pro L1 • Novice Horse Non Pro L2

• Novice Horse Open L1 • Novice Horse Open L2

ORHA 2023 Show Dates:

• NRHA Int Non Pro • NRHA Ltd Non Pro • NRHA Non Pro PT

• NRHA Non Pro

• Open • Intermediate Open • Limited Open • Rookie Pro

There are 12 ORHA approved shows in 2023. Why does

your calendar only show 6? This is because most weekend shows offer 2 full slates of classes, so count as 2. To be eligible to win an ORHA Year End Award, exhibitors must participate in at least 6 of the 12 shows, and complete a minimum of 2 volunteer hours with ORHA.

ORHA Spring Fling – May 12-14 Fletcher’s Horse World, Waterford Steel City Spin – June 2-4 Ancaster Fairgrounds, Ancaster

Spirit of Excellence Challenge – July 1-2 Y Not Farms, Meaford

Canadian Reining Classic – July 28-30 Fletcher’s Horse World, Waterford Steel City Slide – August 18-20 Ancaster Fairgrounds, Ancaster

ORHA Grand Finale & Futurity – September 15-17

Fletcher’s Horse World, Waterford

NRHA Titles NRHA offers awards and recognition to Top

10 exhibitors in specific classes over the course of a year. With the exception of Green Reiner which is based on points, these titles are awarded to exhibitors with top earnings in NRHA approved classes over the course of a year.

Affiliate Regional Championships Maybe you’ll set your sights on an Affiliate

Regional Championship (ARC) title, the Ade- quan® North American Affiliate Champi- onships (NAAC) in conjunction with the NRHA Futurity, or compete only at a local level. To qualify for a 2023 Affiliate Regional Championship, a rider must be an NRHA member and a member of an NRHA affiliate. Riders may join an affiliate at any point and are encouraged to show within it throughout the year to build their reining community and com- pete for awards. Any exhibitor who receives a score higher than a zero at an ARC will be able to enter that class, on that specific horse, at the NAAC in Oklahoma City.

Lifetime Earnings Lifetime earnings, or LTE, can be accumu-

lated every time you show your horse in an NRHA approved event. Not only does it put money in your pocket (or at least offset your show expenses!), it adds to your horse’s show record, increasing their value, and that of any progeny. Focusing on increasing your horse’s earnings is a great goal if you can’t commit to a series of shows, but go when you can. You may wish to look for classes with added money or high numbers of entries to maximize the amount you could win in a particular class. De- pending on your horse’s age, Futurities and Derbies generally offer added money and in- centives that can help fast track this goal.

When Winning is Losing! Whatever your goal, it is important to under-

stand eligibility for different classes. Different levels have maximums for how much you and/or your horse can have previously earned. Sometimes winning an unexpected amount of

money can make you ineligible for a class you were hoping to win a year end award or title in! Read your Rule Book, use the Eligibility Tool on ReinerSuite, or talk to an NRHA or ORHA professional who will be more than happy to help you identify and reach your goals, however big or small!

Best of luck to all ORHA members in the pursuit of success this show season!
