Quarter Horse mare Jess a Deal Wins a Thriller in Battle of the Breeds

AJAX DOWNS, WEDNESDAY MAY 29, 2024 - A big crowd at Ajax Downs on Wednesday was treated to a thrilling finish in the $13,000 Battle of the Breeds as the Quarter Horse mare JESS A DEAL held on to win by a neck over Had to Be Relentless, another Quarter Horse, with the lone Thorough- bred, Silver Candice a closing third.

The longest shot in the field

at 8 to 1, Jess a Deal and jockey Ramiro Castillo quickly sped to the lead early in the 770-yard race while favoured Silver Candice, a Thoroughbred trained by Fort Erie’s leading trainer Julie Mathes, chased in third. Turning for home, Jess a Deal continued to lead while Silver Candice rallied three wide and Had to Be Relentless finishing fast up the rail. At the finish, Jess a Deal held on to win by a neck in a track record time of 41.150. The 8- year-old mare, owned by the Picov Cattle Company and Marie Broad- stock, is trained by Bob Broad- stock. She paid $19.30 to win. This was the third Battle of

the Breeds and the second edition this year. The result put the Quarter Horses up 2 to 1 since the series began last fall. Jess a Deal finished second to the Thoroughbred Sum- mer Retreat in the most recent BOTB on May 15 after breaking slowly from the gate. “Last time we had a bit of a

problem at the gate, she wasn’t paying attention,” said Castillo,

who won two races in the after- noon. “I know this mare though, she breaks good. She did it easy today, I just wanted to keep her speed down to save for the finish.” Broadstock, who trains his

horses on his farm in Nestleton, ON, said he has been concentrating Jess a Deal’s training this year on the Battle of the Breeds series. “She likes the distance and we have been focussing on going around a turn with her this year.” The Broadstocks and Picov

family purchased the Texas bred Jess a Deal following her first five career races. The daughter of Dealagame has nine career wins from 42 starts including the first ‘hook’ (around a turn) race at Ajax Downs, held in 2021. “The Battle of the Breeds

races are exciting and I think the fans love it,” said Broadstock. “Hopefully we can continue to have more of these races this year.” *Another upset on the day

was the win by SHINE RUN- NERR and jockey Cassandra Jeschke in the fourth race. Jeschke got the Ontario bred gelding away from the gate in fast order and the pair won easily for owner, trainer and breeder Amanda McCormack. Shine Runnerr paid $14.90 to win. Follow Ajax Downs on social

AQHA World Show: Over $4.3 million in Purse and Prizes

The 2024 AQHA World

Championship Show, which is November 1-20 in Oklahoma City, marks the 50th anniversary for the event. The national quali- fying period began August 1, 2023, and ends July 31, 2024. The American Quarter

Horse Association is excited to announce that the 2024 Nutrena AQHA and Adequan® Select World Championship Shows will award a minimum of $4.3 mil- lion in purse and prizes! This rep- resents a guaranteed $200,000 increase from 2023 when the

show awarded more than $4 mil- lion in purse, prizes and exhibitor appreciation and a landmark prize pot to mark the 50th an- niversary of the show. To contin- ually improve upon the marquee event, AQHA is proud to an- nounce the increase in added money in addition to the other improvements made over the past year to the international event – all with no increase in entry fees from 2023. “We are in- creasing the prize money by a minimum of $200,000, with no entry fee increase for 2024,” said Jim Hunt, AQHA president. “We brought back World Show jack- ets in 2023 and all of this is in an effort to further promote the world show as a premiere event for exhibitors to attend across the equine industry.” To find out more about how AQHA is im- proving the World Show experi- ence for its exhibitors and for more information about the show,

Horse in Art Show & Sale opens Saturday, August 10, at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. for attendees to meet and mingle with some of the partici- pating artists and have the first opportunity to view and purchase art. Guests can participate in a fixed-price,

luck-of-the-draw

sale and enjoy entertainment by Nelson McKinney. In its 16th year, America’s Horse in Art fea- tures one-of-a-kind pieces from select artists and includes oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, char- coal, bronze and other media in artworks depicting the American Quarter Horse lifestyle. The 2024 show features the works of 31 renowned Western artists. The show will also honour one artist with the Steel Dust Award, spon- sored by Art of the West maga- zine. The Steel Dust Award is selected by a panel of judges based on the artistic merit of one art piece that showcases the role the American Quarter Horse plays in the western lifestyle. Steel Dust, foaled in 1843 in Kentucky and brought to Texas

in 1846, was the first horse to bring attention to the qualities of the American Quarter Horse in the Southwest. An outstanding racing horse, Steel Dust was the most influential sire in the Texas lines of the American Quarter Horse. An online preview of the show is available at www.ameri- cashorseinart.com. Here you will also find information regarding the participating artists and proxy information for the opening night sale. After opening night, the re- maining art will be available for purchase in person and online until October 12. All artwork will remain on display at the Museum through the end of the exhibit, October 12. America’s Horse in Art is underwritten by the Amar- illo Convention & Visitors Bu- reau, the Fairly Group, Ingram Quarter Horses and Wiley Hicks Jr. Inc.
