Spring Fever

By Ryan Kent It is springtime! The

warm weather hits. The hopes, dreams and ambi- tions of the upcoming season are granted a start. While some folks are planning golf

trips,

preparing the RV, or planting a garden of fresh

vegetables, us cutters are busy preparing the high- powered rockets that cat- apult us

into the

upcoming season. A fresh slate of an upcoming sea- son on a new mount, or the old faithful war horse ready to take on the cattle and competition from equally talented rivals.

(and friends) So what is cutting?

How does it work? Cut- ting is a sport of horse- manship and cattle sense combined in a 2 minute 30 second time limit. It’s as honest as it comes as far as competition goes. Your job is to walk into a herd of unknown cattle

while riding, hopefully, a well-trained horse. Your job is to cut out 3 or sometimes 2 head of cat- tle, one at a time, and work that cow while showing your horses’ abilities to hold that cow. You work that cow you have never seen back and forth in front of a strict

were very fortunate to have Andy Adams – Director of Judges for the Na- tional Cutting Horse Association come and take us through a judges seminar. He covered off how judges are edu- cated and their point of view. NCHA also made a few updates to the score card and it was great to review the new card and what judges look for when giving a score. Then it was time to shake off the

rust. Horses have been worked and fit- ted up. Aleve and Advil are back on the regiment for the riders who are also working themselves back into shape. Practices have gone on. Top cutters across Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, and Indiana prepared for the first OCHA show of the season. Flags have been worked, trainers have trained, and coaches have coached. The first show of the year took

place in Ancaster in the old arena on May long weekend. The beginning classes are what is known as the “fresh cattle” classes. The cattle brought in have never been worked by a horse be- fore and give the best opportunities for riders to show off their horses. A rider then must select their turn back help. This means 4 riders are selected to stand in each corner and must aid the competitor in moving and stopping the cow. The weekend was filled with out- standing runs from OCHA members.

Andy Andrews - NCHA Director of Judges & Amanda Law - OCHA President

Some trainers such as Chet Martin, Tyler DeLange, Troy Donaldson, Michelle Waters and Greg Crispin, were there in the pen during every class, coaching and helping fellow competitors. The OCHA offers a great atmos-

phere, lots of friends, and lots of sup- port. The year is off and running. We look forward to the many great runs and lots of laughs this season promises to offer.
