warm earth tones, such as burnt umber, terracotta and clay and contrasting forest colours like sage, pine and turquoise will be strong choices for 2021. These colours are perfectly complemented by natural materials such as rattan, jute, wood and concrete which have all featured heavily in the most-saved photos on Houzz lately.
Think Clay Pink
We’re spotting a lot of this clay pink colour cropping up in new Houzz projects and expect to see even more homeowners embrace this attractive hue in 2021. Teaming well with concrete, wood, brick or brass, with black-and- white or pure, gleaming white, clay-pink-coloured tiles are very versatile.
The Rise of Antibacterial Materials
One thing we’ll take away from this year is the importance of hygiene. As sanitary practices have become a life- saving routine that we’ve integrated into our daily lives, on Houzz we’re seeing a rise in touchless flushing, and infrared sensors in bathrooms to meet the desire to reduce unnecessary touching. And, in kitchens, we have started to see similar intentions through voice-activated appliances.
Professionals on Houzz are reporting a greater demand for surface coatings that are bacteriostatic (capable of inhibiting the growth or reproduction of bacteria) and antimicrobial metals. Copper and its alloys, brass and bronze, fulfil these criteria, so we expect to see more of these materials in tapware, and kitchen and bathroom fixtures such as sinks and splashbacks, in 2021.

An increasing awareness for our impact on the environment, coupled with disruptions to international supply chains throughout 2020, has been noted by professionals on Houzz, who, as a result, report that their clients are turning to locally-sourced goods and products. We expect this to continue into 2021, with the process for sourcing also coming under the microscope, as consumers become more aware of the sustainability of their choices and discussion about the carbon footprint of certain products continues.
Works of Art
Whether they’re brightly patterned, salvaged vintage styles or rich zellige options, one rising trend spotted on Houzz is the use of artistic tiles. With homeowners making bolder choices in their bathroom renovations, designers on Houzz expect to see this trend continue, with more homeowners opting for unique or handmade bathroom tiles.
Focal Fixtures
In the most popular bathroom photos on Houzz, we’re seeing homeowners stray from standard chrome tapware, leaning towards brass, matt black and rose gold instead. Professionals on Houzz predict this deviation will only continue, suggesting that matt white as a finish for fittings will gain popularity in the coming year.
