STAR INSTALLATION FROM DANCING

Earning this issue’s ‘Star Installation’ spot is the stunning transformation of an iconic dance ven SolidNature helped the owners to capture the

Precision-carved marble and travertine have transformed a legendary dance venue into a sophisticated and elegant restaurant in just three months.

Iconic nightclub/café Danzig in the heart of The Hague, Netherlands, has re-opened as gourmet restaurant D Cuisine with a luxurious new interior focused on natural stone, courtesy of high-end stone supplier SolidNature.

Danzig had been something of an institution in the city for 20 years. Located just a street away from the Dutch parliament buildings, it was popular with high-ranking government ministers. When owners Michiel and Valierie Meininger were forced to close the doors of the venue due to the coronavirus pandemic in March, instead of embarking on a simple refurbishment, they decided overnight to fulfil a long-held dream – to transform the space into a high-quality restaurant.

Whilst well-established Executive Chef Miljo Weimar was appointed to devise an innovative French-Asian fusion menu, and his wife Sophia Kahtane worked on a new business model and staff training, Ilse van Stoltz from West Egg Creatives focused on the interior design.

Dramatic, brown, enamelled Shahan Dark marble was chosen for the tabletops and the washrooms as it has distinctive veins and is hardwearing enough to withstand constant cleaning.

Initially, the same brown marble was going to be used for the centrepiece of the space – the bar that runs the length of the restaurant and incorporates a DJ booth.

However, after visiting the SolidNature showroom outside Amsterdam and seeing the huge range of stones on offer, the client decided on Aurea Vesperti, a black marble shot through with golden veins, for the bar top. This contrasting stone extends to the pass, where food is served, and creates a visual unity to the space.

On the same visit to the showroom, the client was shown SolidNature’s state-of-the-art machinery that can carve any stone into customised 3D patterns. A playful, repeated fan shape was specified for the lower portion of the bar, which is clad in Popcorni Travertine. It can be lit in a range of mood colours to enhance any occasion and creates a strong, visual contrast with the polished Aurea Vesperti marble bar top. Regular diners are often surprised to discover that the bar is not clad in fish-scale tiles, but is a single slab of natural stone.

The design and fit-out of D Cuisine has been future-proofed so it can open D Café next door – a dance venue with the DNA of the original Danzig – once restrictions are lifted.

Owner Michiel Meininger commented: “Ultimately, we want to bring the international allure of high-quality restaurant-nightclubs you find in Barcelona, Madrid and New York to The Hague.”

SolidNature CEO David Mahyari added: “We’re so proud that our range of stones and our innovative technology have had a hand in transforming this famous venue into such a stunning and versatile space.”
