The experts at home design platform Houzz have compiled extensive research to identify 202 popular trends we can there

The year 2020 has thrown most things off course, and that includes design. From more hygienic materials to clean-looking spaces, 2021 will bring a generous dose of trends impacted by our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as fashions prompted by other global concerns and influences.

With a community of millions of homeowners and over 2.5 million active home renovation and design professionals around the world, Houzz has unique insights into how people are renovating their homes. By analysing Houzz data, browsing hundreds of home design photos, and interviewing professionals on Houzz Pro, we have been able to identify this collection of home design trends that you can expect to see a lot more of in 2021.

Everything’s All White

In the kitchen, it’s expected that more and more homeowners are going to go with an all-white colour scheme moving forward. It seems this neutral, light- enhancing choice for the hardest-working room in the house is growing in popularity, with searches on Houzz for ‘white kitchen’ rising significantly during 2020 compared to 2019. We’re also seeing many popular photos on Houzz that have white worktops, and we expect to see more in 2021, perhaps reflecting a pandemic-fuelled desire for clean-looking cooking spaces.

Bold Bathrooms

While white kitchens grow in popularity, we’re seeing our community starting to go in the opposite direction in their

bathrooms, with homeowners instead filling their idea books with designs bursting with colour. Additionally, ‘pink bathroom’, ‘navy bathroom’ and ‘gold bathroom’ were brand- new entries to the most popular search terms for 2020.

The Multi-Zone Kitchen

A traditional three-zone “work triangle” setup in the kitchen creates an efficient connection between the fridge, sink and oven. But many homeowners want their kitchens to emphasise a variety of other tasks and allow for other cooks as well. In response, we’re seeing homeowners on Houzz working with designers to add more touchpoints to that triangle shape and create additional work zones. This “work trapezoid” might include dedicated areas for baking, prepping and chopping, or separate stations for snacks, drinks or homework.

Oversized Rectangular Tiles

There are a lot of reasons to consider large rectangular tiles in a bathroom. Fewer grout lines mean less cleaning and less visual clutter. Plus, the large-format tile can help visually expand a small space. We’re seeing large tiles used in a variety of classic patterns, such as herringbone, stacked and brick. If you’re considering large rectangular tiles for the bathroom floor, professionals on Houzz recommend going with a matte finish, which provides some slip resistance.

Nature-Inspired Palettes

The incorporation of nature into our interiors looks set to continue, with colour experts on Houzz predicting that
