year, Surface Design Show’s New Talent section will be expanding for the 2020 edition. New Talent supports emerging creatives, specialising in producing interior and exterior surface materials and lighting design. The area is curated by Chief Creative Director at Trendease International, Jennifer Castoldi. All of those chosen to exhibit in New Talent have been in business for five years or less and the section has grown substantially, with 37 exhibitors now showcasing, compared to 16 last year.
Appearing for the first time is New Talent Plus, a section of the show that bridges the gap between emerging material talent and existing manufacturers.
Surface Design Awards
Renowned practices including Steven Holl Architects, Mikhail Riches, AECOM, WilkinsonEyre and Chris Dyson Architects are among those shortlisted for 2020 Surface Design Awards, which exemplify creative use of surface materials and lighting.
Talks, a series of sessions supported by the Institution of Lighting Professionals and collated by, Rebecca Weir from
Lightbout.IQ, will underpin this knowledge sharing.
Inspiring Talks
Visitors can also enjoy a packed programme of talks; with approximately 30 presentations from 50 speakers taking place across the purpose-built stages. The talk topics include ‘Materials Edit - a dedicated materials installation featuring one-of-a-kind inspirational objects and materials’, presented by Hannah Malein, Creative Director of Colour Hive and Head of Trends for MIX Magazine. Touching on the show’s theme of ‘Close to Home’, which addresses the current climate emergency debate in the context of the surface and materials sector, for both UK and international markets, Jo Roan, Associate Strategy Director at PriestmanGoode talks ‘Get Onboard: Reduce. Reuse. Rethink’.
Other highlights include the ever-popular Opening Night Debate, supported this year by the RIBA, and the lively PechaKucha evening, which will be hosted by Chris Dyson of Chris Dyson Architects.

There are an impressive 39 projects across 14 categories in total, from retail and public buildings to commercial projects and housing, including new categories in public realm and affordable housing for 2020. Such was the quality of entries submitted, that some projects won nominations across several categories. Demonstrating the truly international reach of the awards, now in their sixth year, projects on the shortlist spanned 13 countries, from 34 different organisations with emerging practices represented, as well as established firms. UK-based studios led the way with 14 finalists and those from China, India and the US all having strong showings in multiple categories.
The judging panel is co-chaired by Paul Priestman, Designer, Co-Founder and Chairman of global design consultancy PriestmanGoode, and Amin Taha, Chairman of Groupwork and Director of Amin Taha Architects. The remaining judges are Nikki Barton, Head of Digital Design at British Airways; Sean Griffiths, artist, architect and academic practicing at Modern Architect; Charles Holland, Principal at Charles Holland Architects; Glenn Johnson, Director Of Design at the Advanced Design Group of Collins Aerospace; Daniel Mota Veiga, Global Head of Product Design for KEF / GP Acoustics; and Steve Webb, Co-founder of Webb Yates Engineers. The winners will be revealed during a breakfast reception on 13th February at Surface Design Show.
