BATHROOMS & KITCHENS
JUST KEEP SCROLLING
Rob Holroyd, Contracts Manager at Easy Bathrooms, explains why it is
important to tap into Instagram trends in order to inspire your clients.
Instagram is a hotbed of interiors inspiration. From light and bright Scandi style to moody hues, maximalism to minimalism- there’s something for everyone to muse over.
While savvy homeowners go there directly to find their own ideas, it’s also a perfect place for fitters and industry professionals to keep up-to-date with what’s hot…and what’s no longer.
Once upon a time, brick-laid metro tiles were the pinnacle of ‘in’. Now, when scrolling the feed, metro tiles can still be found but are being re-thought, with homeowners mixing and matching them with different styles, colours, textures, finishes and dimensions.
In 2015, the subway tile was very much about the gloss finish and bevelled edge, for example. Fast-forward to 2019 and it’s clear that, while it’s still popular, it’s not as ‘Instagram-worthy’ as flat, matte metro tiles laid in herringbone or basket weave.
The moral of this story is clear: it’s vital that fitters – especially those who pride themselves on understanding and advising clients on the latest trends – need to keep their finger on the pulse. Those who don’t, risk falling behind.
Let’s take a look at some of the most prevalent Insta-trends of 2019, which we expect to continue well into the new year.
Large and Lively Large-format tiles have always been popular, especially in
homes with plenty of space.
Bigger tiles result in fewer grout lines, which creates a simpler, less ‘fussy’ look than a small tile and makes the eye believe that the area is bigger than the reality. But, historically, there has been an industry-wide ‘fear’ of installing large tiles in small bathrooms.
A larger tile requires a bigger cutting bed than smaller tiles; a piece of equipment which some tilers may not own. However, consumers are wise to the fact that this equipment can be leased from retailers, so it’s important that fitters can match this demand.
Added texture is an even bigger pull, with it becoming one of the biggest trends in 2019. Tiles are available with 3D waves, a concrete-like finish or split-face.
The Right Direction The chevron tile is a highly-distinctive and recognisable
trend, adding depth and personality to any room in the home. It is one of the fastest-growing styles in the UK, with products being popularised by Instagram influencers and filtering through to small-scale home renovations.

With ‘left’ and ‘right’ tiles, the quantity is split into two and fitters should order half of each.
Metro with a Twist The metro tile is a staple for any design project. Offering
simplicity, it’s a truly versatile product which looks great in any room of the home. But there are plenty of variations of this tile to make it a stand-out feature.
The ‘reverse metro’, for example, offers a unique inverse bevelled edge which helps add depth to interiors. They are also available in white Carrara marble-effect, bright rose pink or black with white and gold marbling in a letterbox shape – which are popular with interior designers.
Being clued up about which styles and patterns are available helps fitters to upsell or simply provide a unique customer experience.
Opulent Effects Opulence is going nowhere. Seen in large-format, white-
marble-effect tiles, as well as letterbox-shape tiles, this luxury style is very popular.
Large slab tiles with gold marbling are becoming popular in everything from rental properties to high-end detached homes, hotels and retail spaces. The idea with opulence, is that the marbling is not so subtle. Forget light veining on light tiles, it is all about the gold marble matched with white or black tiles, or pure white marble on dark tiles.
Bold and Bright Bright tile colours allow homeowners to add serious
personality to their project. Fitters should know about the different options available, from rose pink letterbox tiles, to olive green wall panels and blue encaustic-patterned tiles – there’s something for everyone.
Easy Bathrooms has thousands of quality porcelain and ceramic tiles, for all rooms of the home, in hundreds of styles to suit every taste – exactly like those seen on Instagram.
