HEALTH & SAFE T Y

Sponsored by Specsavers SAFETY IN FOCUS

Specsavers has launched a new safety eyewear range, which the company says is a significant step forward in workplace protection, combining industry-leading safety standards with user-focused design.

Site health and safety has an eyecare blind spot. Eye injuries are one of the most serious and frequent forms of accidents on work sites – more than one in three workers told Specsavers they knew someone who had injured their eyes at work, but staggeringly a quarter of tradespeople also said that they don’t protect their eyes on site.

These figures show that proper eye protection isn’t as easy as just grabbing a pair of safety glasses, particularly for almost half of tradespeople who need prescription lenses to see. Without access to prescription safety eyewear, this huge slice of the workforce is often left wearing their regular glasses and foregoing proper eye protection.

The best of both Prescription safety eyewear is a game-changer for glasses- wearing tradespeople, many of whom have had to put up with doubling up on glasses (and the discomfort and impaired vision that comes with it) for their whole careers. Specsavers’ newly enhanced safety eyewear range, co-created with Stryder Eyewear, is the latest example of the comfortable, stylish and sustainable prescription safety glasses available on the market.

Knowing that tradespeople have been living with discomfort when it comes to their eye protection, Specsavers focused squarely on comfort and functionality in the design process, drawing on Stryder Eyewear’s half a century of experience in the business. State-of-the-art injection moulding methods have been used to create adjustable temple tips with over-moulded soft parts of enhanced comfort.

Made with sustainable materials such as G850 Rnew and Pebax Rnew 40R53, these frames align with Specsavers’ commitment to reducing environmental impact without compromising performance. Customers can choose from an array of colours, including black, grey, crystal, burgundy, green, and silver.

Fogging is another common issue experienced by tradespeople who wear safety glasses over their regular specs, and as a result was another priority in the manufacturing process. Complex moulding construction allowed the addition of an indirect venting system and seamless side shield integration, which dramatically reduces lens fogging on premium frames. The result is safety eyewear that provides maximum protection, maximum comfort, and clear vision; tradespeople are no longer forced to choose an imperfect combination of the three.

The new safety eyewear collection is available in three tiers — classic, specialist, and premium — priced at £90, £100, and £130 respectively. Each tier has been carefully designed to cater to varying workplace needs, blending robust safety features with contemporary, stylish designs. Customers can explore the collection in Specsavers stores nationwide, with the classic tier included in Specsavers’ popular 2-for-1 offer.

A new standard Providing suitable PPE is a legal requirement for employers, and this includes safety glasses in many cases. However, this requirement often doesn’t consider the huge number of tradespeople who also need vision correction, leaving a serious gap in the protection provided on job sites and increasing

the risk of serious eye injuries. Raising awareness of the availability and quality of prescription safety glasses is also important; only one in five tradespeople told Specsavers that they knew about prescription safety eyewear, even though 60% of them wear their everyday glasses on site.

“Tradespeople have been forced to choose between safety and comfort for too long and, frankly, they deserve better. We’ve created our new range of safety glasses with one of the best in the business to provide them with a solution that means there’s no need to compromise” said Dona Mclafferty, Corporate Account Manager (Safety Eyewear) at Specsavers. “Prescription safety eyewear is a blind spot for too many tradespeople and employers; we’ll keep working with the whole industry to change this.
